CBD IN YOUR SKINCARE? A Beginner's Guide

CBD. aka CANNABIDIOL.

aka. THE NEXT BIG THING IN SKINCARE.

Say hello to beauty's new super ingredient - Cannabis, but specifically CBD. Making rapid progress and driving innovation, this superplant has A LOT of positive traits and uses - and being part of your beauty routine is one of them. Weed-infused skincare is certainly nothing new, and is typically found as small-batch, handcrafted, apothecary type of products and brands. Up until recently, more and more cannabis skincare brands are starting to knock on the rather conservative beauty industry's door - and for good reason! Cannabis is an all-natural ingredient, that has amazing properties that not only benefits the skin, but can also assist in healing and treating medical skin conditions at the same time. Although the legalization aspects of cannabis is still an uphill battle, CBD (Cannabidiol) - which is legal in most parts of Canada and the US, is a key part of the cannabis plant that is going to be a major game changer for the beauty and wellness industry.

What is CBD?

CBD or Cannabidiol, is a compound part of the cannabis plant that is completely non-psychoactive (unlike the plant's more prevalent compound THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol that is responsible for getting you 'high'). Used to treat a number of conditions, it can be found in CBD-dominant flower strains, can be ingested in forms such as pills, oils, tinctures, and can be used as a topical.

Why CBD for skincare?

CBD is the underdog in terms of treating conditions, including skin conditions. With hemp and hemp seed oil being the more prevalent ingredient derived from the cannabis plant that is used in skincare and beauty, it's not until recent that CBD has come to the forefront. More studies and reports have explored the use of CBD's role in the treatment of skin conditions from dry skin, acne to more acute conditions such as psoriasis. A recent 2017 study published by JAAD (Journal of American Academy of Dermatology "The role of cannabinoids in dermatology") summarized cannabinoids helped reduce inflammation and itch in cases of psoriasis, eczema, and allergic dermatitis when applied to the skin - which is a major step in terms of treating these conditions.

CBD Skin Benefits:

  • NUTRITION - HIGH IN vitamin a, b-complex, c, d & e

  • RICH ANTIOXIDANT - protects skin from free-radicals and environmental pollutants

  • AIDS IN ANTI-AGING - A key INGREDIENT IN keeping skin's elasticity

  • REDUCES INFLAMMATION -

  • ACNE-CONTROL

There are a handful of Cannabis-infused skincare products and emerging brands that are currently out on the market - including Herb Essntls (Sativa Oil products) and Apothecanna (CBD + Hemp products), with more being developed and launched (including our own ðŸ˜‰) in the next few years. It's a fairly new sub-sector in both the beauty and canna industry - and with the glowing benefits of Cannabis + CBD, it is shows no signs of slowing down. It's a wide-open market, and we look forward to seeing its growth!
